Basically, a U-value tells you how effective a material is at insulating heat, so it is particularly useful when shopping for new windows.
Unless you are some sort of window expert like we are, you may not be familiar with the ins and outs of window terminology, such as U-value.
The purpose of this blog is to pass on some of our knowledge surrounding U-values, so the term is less foreign to you.
U-values are often mentioned in promotional material for windows, so it helps to have a grasp on its meaning.
Why U-values Matter for Windows
As we briefly explained, U-values are connected to replacement windows because the U-value unit of a window measures how well it insulates and stops heat from escaping.
The lower the U-value, the better the insulation a window provides.
On the other hand, a high thermal transmittance (another way of expressing U-value) indicates poor insulation performance, allowing a considerable amount of heat to escape.

The Varying U-values Across Different Window Glazing
As expected, single-glazed windows have the highest thermal transmittance, meaning they are the least efficient compared to double and triple glazing. Their U-value can be as high as 6.0 W/m²K, indicating poor insulation.
Double-glazed windows typically have U-values between 1.2 and 3.7 W/m²K, with current building regulations requiring at least 1.4 W/m²K.
Triple-glazed windows often achieve U-values below 1.0 W/m²K, offering much better insulation.

Energy Efficient Glazing is Important For Window Performance
The highest level of window performance is achieved when energy-efficient glazing is included in a window unit.
Energy-efficient glazing excels at trapping heat, significantly improving home insulation. It relies on Low-E glass, which has an invisible coating designed to reflect heat back into the home.
Double or triple-glazed windows with energy-efficient glazing offer enhanced comfort and can reduce the financial burden of energy costs.
When choosing energy-efficient glazing, it’s important to consider U-values as well as factors like privacy, security, and sound insulation needs.

All windows purchased from Budget Windows come with energy-efficient glass as standard, a crucial feature that ensures excellent home insulation and lower energy bills.
